Dear Bargaining Unit Members:
I want to add to Sharon’s remembrance of Judy Baar Topinka that the late Comptroller filed a Friend of the Court Brief defending our pensions, and she was endorsed in the last election by the Illinois Federation of Teachers.
Her death is a profound loss to the State of Illinois.

RE: Death of State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka
It is with great sadness that we received the news on the passing of State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka this morning. Comptroller Topinka was always a good friend to Northeastern and to our students. Over the past two years, NEIU had joined Comptroller Topinka’s initiatives to strengthen healthy eating among young children through her Culinary Kids Program as well as her Creating Educational Opportunities initiative to provide minority students scholarship opportunities. As a way to honor Comptroller Topinka’s life and legacy as a public servant, NEIU will continue to support these initiatives in the years to come.
At a personal level, I was honored when in 2012, Comptroller Topinka named me as one of her four honorees at the Women’s History Month Awards Ceremony. She will be greatly missed for her exemplary spirit and strong commitment to the common good.
I extend sincere condolences to the family and friends of Comptroller Topinka. May she rest in peace and her legacy endure.
