TOMORROW, Wednesday 2/25: Teach-In for National Adjunct Walkout Day, SU 003 12-2:00

Dear all,

Check out this great event tomorrow and be there to support and learn. Thanks to the NEIU/UPI Political Education Committee and the Take Back NEIU folks who have organized the teach-in and informational tabling.

Read below for details and be there Wednesday at noon!

Join us to raise awareness about working conditions at NEIU!

Across the country on Wednesday February 25th adjunct faculty and instructors— university professors who work on a temporary, semester to semester or year to year basis —are participating in teach-ins, class walk-outs, rallies and other forms of direct action and political education. While NEIU is not organizing a walk-out, there will be a teach-in from 12 to 2 PM in SU 003 and information tables in the Village Square from 11am to 4pm.

Join us! Sit at the table! Talk with students and colleagues about working conditions at NEIU. Attend the teach in! Bring students and colleagues to hear from NEIU adjunct faculty and instructors about our labor!

Adjunct faculty, including those called Instructors who provide the majority of university instruction, are being part-timed and nickel and dimed. Last year at NEIU, a whopping 62% of all our classes were taught by instructors or adjuncts.

Faculty working conditions are students’ learning conditions. As tuition edges up and student debt load rises, as universities hire more highly paid administrators and hope to build expensive dorms, students are priced out of classrooms. When classes are cancelled, as we know happens every semester at NEIU, instructors and adjuncts lose jobs, income, and in some cases health insurance. This instability makes it extremely difficult to plan our personal and professional lives. Denying adjuncts job security also means denying students the classes they need to graduate on time and plan their work and family lives.
