UPI Responds to Chicago State University’s Declaration of Financial Exigence

Higher education leader responds to financial emergency at CSU, other IL universities

CHICAGO – In response to CSU’s declaration of financial exigence today and the ongoing crisis in higher education created by Governor Bruce Rauner, John Miller, President of the University Professionals of Illinois (IFT Local 4100) issued the following statement:

“Governor Rauner’s failure to fund our public universities is now directly harming our students at Chicago State University and all of our institutions. CSU’s declaration of financial exigence today and the layoffs at Eastern Illinois University and Western Illinois University are the direct result of the Governor’s refusal to enact a state budget before his political demands are met. His irresponsible actions are failing our students and harming the long-term economic growth of the state.

Chicago State University serves a vital mission in the heart of Chicago. For the past several weeks, we have heard directly from many CSU students and alumnae who credit CSU faculty and staff for their personal and professional success. That could all end.

Governor Rauner has an opportunity to help resolve this issue immediately by signing SB 2403, which would provide tuition assistance to students in need and funding for community colleges to continue providing quality education to our students.

On behalf of nearly 3,000 faculty and staff members at Chicago State University, Northeastern Illinois University, Governors State University, Eastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Western Illinois University, and University of Illinois Springfield, we are calling for immediate action from Governor Rauner to fund our future.”
