MUST DO (if you can): Come to a Springfield Rally for Higher Education – April 20

Hey Folks, and boy-o-boy do I hope you are outside right now. It’s beautiful today and I will be getting out into the sun in a minute or so too.

But first, I’ve got some important reminders to share. Heads up!

We have until Monday to sign up for the buses NEIU is sponsoring to take people to the April 20 Rally for Higher Education starting at Noon in Springfield. Scroll down to rsvp and note that university sponsored buses board at 7:30 am Wednesday morning and leave campus at 8:00 am.

DO THIS AND BRING STUDENTS IF YOU CAN!! Please forward the targeted below to your students and ask them to join us for this important protest. Thanks so much to the administration for organizing transportation to this event. Note the encouragement to go in their email. Get on the bus!!

We have to keep up the pressure on Springfield. There are bills at play to fund MAP. Representative Lou Lang has put forward a bill to provide revenue. We have to support resistance to the defunding of our university and the destruction of public services in the state.

Interested in getting down state earlier in the day for another rally to Fund Our Future? PLEASE DO!!!

There’s a 10:00 am Rally for a Fair Tax sponsored by the Grassroots Collaborative in Springfield on 4/20 too.

Everyone will gather at the Firefighter’s Memorial between the Stratton Blg. and the Capitol and then move into the Rotunda at 10:30 for this one. We will be joining UPI people from around the state. Afterwards, this crowd will join the Rally for Higher Ed at 12:30.

To carpool down for the early rally Wednesday, you need to leave Chicago by 6:00 am. Interested? I know of one car with a couple of spaces open.

Or, if you want a motel room Tuesday night to attend the 10:30 rally, let me know by Sunday evening. Email me!

UPI 4100 will reimburse for travel to Springfield if you leave before the NEIU sponsored bus takes off.

Alternatively, the bus from school is a great way to bring students to this event.

One way or another, please try to make the trip to Springfield on 4/20 a priority. Freaked out about missing classes? Remember we are in an existential fight right now to keep universities in Illinois open.

Join the fight.

Dear University Community,

All University students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a Statehouse rally to invest in higher education on Wednesday, April 20.

The University will provide bus transportation leaving from Northeastern’s Main Campus to Springfield and back to the Main Campus. Those who will participate should arrive at Parking Lot D across from the Alumni Center by 7:30 a.m. Buses will depart promptly at 8a.m.

Please RSVP for the bus ride via this form. If you have questions, please contact us at saffairs@neiu.edu.

With such an unparalleled Illinois budget situation, this remains a teachable moment for our students; however, classes are not canceled on April 20th.

Students, please check with faculty members and discuss any impact on your class work before missing class to attend this event. Attendance will be taken for the event so that faculty may verify which of their students attended.

Faculty may take their classes at their discretion. Faculty may excuse any students who wish to attend this event. Student Affairs will be taking attendance, should you wish to verify student attendance. Faculty may not use a furlough day to attend, however, if you are on contingent salary week you should attend at your own discretion. We are asking that you are sensitive to the number of classes canceled given the furlough program.

Staff who plan to attend will need to ensure adequate staff arrangements have been within their areas or departments. Please note, employees who plan to attend will need to take a vacation/personal day and will not be able to use a furlough day.

We’re hoping that coming together during these unprecedented times will bring about funding for public higher education. Let’s show our solidarity by wearing Northeastern gear or colors. Please also bring a brown bag lunch to eat on the bus trip.

Sincerely,

Richard J. Helldobler, Ph.D.
Provost

Daniel López, Jr., Ph.D.
Vice President for Student Affairs
