April 20 Rally in Springfield – make this a priority (make it a must do), two ways to travel down

Dear NEIU/UPI:

I’m sending an update on the April 20 events in Springfield from our UPI President John Miller and our IFT Legislative Director Nick Yelverton.

This is a must do event. Please err on the side of canceling your classes and making this rally for Public Higher Education and for a fair budget. Things are happening in Springfield and we need to continue to help empower the legislative resistance to Rauner’s attempt at gutting the public sector and destroying our university system.

Remember, from NEIU we have two ways to travel.

(1) Get on the bus organized by the university and be there for the Higher Ed Rally at 12:30. Note the link below in the passage from their original email.

“All University students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a Statehouse rally to invest in higher education on Wednesday, April 20. The University will provide bus transportation leaving from Northeastern’s Main Campus to Springfield and back to the Main Campus. Those who will participate should arrive at Parking Lot D across from the Alumni Center by 7:30 a.m. Buses will depart promptly at 8a.m. Please RSVP for the bus ride via this form. If you have questions, please contact us at saffairs@neiu.edu.”

(2) Carpool, or train, down to Springfield and get reimbursed by UPI for a flat rate for travel. And if you email rsvp to me by 4:00 today, you can go down Tuesday and stay in a hotel room courtesy of UPI.

Be there early at 10:00 for a rally for Fair Funding in the Rotunda.

CHECK OUT THIS OVERVIEW OF THE DAY FROM JOHN AND NICK BELOW. Please let me know if you can make it down for the early shift and/or need a room.

From the UPI Leadership in Springfield:

April 20th Springfield Day of Action
On April 20th two important rallies will be held in Springfield to address the long term and short term crisis that confront Illinois public Higher Education. The Coalition for a Fair Tax is hosting an action and rally at 10:30am to support a constitutional amendment to solve the long-term revenue problem in Illinois by ending the restriction of a flat income tax. Invest in Illinois Higher Education Coalition is hosting a rally to demand the immediate funding of our public universities and our Student MAP grants. The UPI is a member of both the Coalition for a Fair Tax the Invest in Illinois Higher Education Coalition. Both events occur in and around the Capitol building. We are encouraging our members to wear your green UPI T-shirts and attend both events. Many chapters are trying to arrange carpooling. Please contact your Chapter President for additional transportation details. Your participation is vital to these efforts.
