TOMORROW: NEIU faculty and students speak out against Gov. Rauner during more forced furlough days
Group will picket, address how lack of funding for higher education is causing harm, reaching epidemic proportions

CHICAGO – In response to Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) forcing additional furlough days in order to keep the university open this summer and fall, faculty, students, elected officials, and others will speak out on Tuesday morning about Governor Bruce Rauner’s lack of leadership.

On Tuesday, April 11 and Wednesday, April 12, NEIU will shut down due to Rauner’s refusal to fund public universities and MAP grants for low-income students until the legislature agrees to pass his political “turnaround agenda” first.

Last month, NEIU shut the university down for a week. Last year at this time, NEIU employees were placed on furlough to keep the university afloat as well. Since then, the financial condition of the university, along with all public universities and community colleges across the state, has gotten dramatically worse, threatening working families, students, and the economic future of Illinois.

WHAT: Rally and news conference in protest of additional furlough days and Governor Rauner’s failure to do his job to produce a balanced budget and fund higher education

WHEN: Tuesday, April 11
7:00 – 9:00 AM (speakers at 8:30 AM)

WHO: NEIU faculty and staff, students, elected officials, and other community members affected by the abuse of higher education

WHERE: Northeastern Illinois University – 3600 W. Foster Ave, Chicago, IL
(See campus map here.)

Speakers will be available for media interviews immediately following the event.
