MANILA, Philippines, Aug. 21 -- Philippine government prosecutors on Monday dismissed a criminal complaint filed by the police against the suspected author of the Love Bug virus.

The court threw out the complaint against Onel de Guzman, a 23-year-old college dropout, for lack of sufficient evidence.

No other suspects are being prosecuted.

Chief state prosecutor Jovencito Zuno said the state would not pursue the charges of theft of electronic data and communication system break-in filed against de Guzman who admitted last month he may have accidentally set off the virus into cyberspace.

The virus was the most destructive ever to be released into the Internet. It shredded data and disabled millions of computer programs worldwide when it was set off on May 4.

The Philippines' National Bureau of Investigation previously said the virus was traced to a home telephone number listed in the name of de Guzman's elder sister; Guzman's college thesis was about Internet password stealing.

The NBI had said de Guzman's software, when coupled with a self-replicating program written by fellow suspect and schoolmate Michael Buen, was similar to the features of the Love Bug.
